Web Design and Development

Well, it’s hard to believe, but I’m finally learning how to design my own web sites.  This is the only area where I am lacking and I thought I could never learn it.  People told me there are two types of site builders: designers and developers.  My thinking is why not be able to do both?  It would make me to be a one man web site / applications developer.  I could live where I wanted, I could work my own hours, and call all the shots.  I think the trick is to just force yourself to do it, and always be improving.  I’m doing all this with my five-year-old Windows Vista laptop and Photoshop CS3.  It sites the more you develop on your computer, the less you need to have one with all the up to date features.

iPod Touch

My iPod Touch broke today, it won’t charge or turn on. Oh well, maybe it’s time to move on and up to an iPhone though I just don’t see the need: I very rarely get important emails, most of them are from match.com, Katy Singles, and places like Barnes and Noble. I was hoping that free Wi-Fi would be the way of the future, but that is only possible in smaller socialistic governments like those that exist in Europe. I think us Americans, in a free market, will have to pay a small fee to access the Web anywhere. Not really a problem for me, but something to think about.

At work I have a difficult assignment: make an expression engine attachment that offers certain publishing features. This is my most challenging assignment to date but I would really like to finish it. It will take some research, and a lot of hard work but it will be worth it in the end.

That’s all for now, hopefully I will finish this website soon.

WordPress is awesome!!!

I just dumped my static site into WordPress and now I have in effect a Content Managment system for my website.   I love WordPress.  The only issues are the paragraph at the top of the subpages is pushing  down the main content so you have to scroll down to see.  I need a suggestion for getting it up to the top.  Other than that I have to skin the comments page and archive page.  Not how I had imagined my weekend but it seems to be much more productive than playing video games.

Back to the Blog

It’s been over a year but I finally decided to do revamp my blog to match the rest of my website which, of course, was created from a free CSS template that I found on the web.   I don’t have a problem with using a template because I’m not a designer, at least not now.

I haven’t written in a long time and a lot has happened in that time. I’ve moved to Texas.  I’ve found my “dream job”: working as a site builder/web developer for the best IT firm in Houston.  If that’s not a lot I don’t know what is.

Tonight I want to rearrange the website.  I won’t say “redesign” because it’s not a total redesign but rather minor tweaking.   I’m very happy to note that my attempt at creating a new blog theme for the WordPress portion of my site was successful.  It matches the template perfectly.  I need to do some research in the WordPress docs to make comment pages and such, but for the most part it is done.

In the future I will hopefully not be so lazy and will write more.  Mostly this is for me to keep track of my thoughts and look back at what has happened.  In the future, I will write more about Houston, my job, my friends and family.
